How to choose a sleep mask
By Sleepy Shop editorial team · 2026-10-07
Compare shape, fit, fabric and care instructions to choose a sleep mask that feels right for your bedtime routine.
A sleep mask is a simple idea: a layer between your eyes and unwanted light. Choosing one takes a little more thought. A shape that feels comfortable sitting upright may feel different with your head on a pillow, and a fabric name alone tells you little about the strap or seams.
Start with where you plan to wear it: your own bed, a guest room or a plane. Then compare the details below. These are shopping considerations, not results from a product test or a promise about how deeply you will sleep.
Start with the shape
Flat masks sit closer to the face. Contoured designs create space around the eyes. Check the photos from the side as well as the front: the depth of the eye area and the shape around the nose can matter as much as the overall width.
If you usually lie on your side, consider where the edge of the mask and any adjustment hardware will meet your pillow. Comfort is personal; a thicker shape is not automatically a better fit.
Check the fit before the colour
Look for the strap range and mask dimensions. “Adjustable” is useful only if the available adjustment suits you. Check where the fastening sits and whether the strap can be adjusted without making the mask feel tight.
Avoid assuming “one size” means every face. If measurements are missing, get them before choosing.
Read the material details
Check the fabric that touches your skin, the outer fabric and any padding separately. A description such as “silky” describes a feel; it does not establish that the material is silk. Use the stated composition to compare products.
Pay attention to seams, trims and closures too. These small details are easy to miss in a styled product photo.
Make care part of the decision
Read the cleaning and drying instructions before buying. Follow the instructions for that specific mask rather than assuming every mask can go in the washing machine. A care routine that fits your everyday life makes the accessory easier to keep using.
